What is Jaw Surgery?
Jaw surgery, or orthognathic surgery, is a corrective procedure that allows us to resolve problems such as teeth not lining up correctly, or insufficient space for teeth to fit correctly. Jaw surgery can prevent issues speaking, eating, breathing, and crowding. This corrects the functionality in the area, leading to a safer and healthier body, but can also improve facial appearance as well. While cosmetic enhancement is not the goal, it tends to be a bonus.
Why Do I Need Jaw Surgery?
A large number of patients find that they could benefit from jaw surgery as it can resolve multiple problems at one time. Surgery can benefit those with an improper bite or misaligned teeth or jaws. Because your jaws grow at different rates during development, by the time you are finished growing, you may find that you are in a rut of problems. Some problems that we can remedy using jaw surgery include difficulty chewing, biting, or swallowing, which can usually be attributed to misalignment.
We can also treat speech problems along with chronic pain in the jaw or the TMJ (the temporomandibular joint) caused by pressure on places where there should not be pressure. We can also work to remedy open/under/over bites which can also accompany a slew of problems just on their own, such as a protruding jaw. A protruding jaw can be uncomfortable and unsafe. Finally, we can improve your breathing exponentially.
Jaw placement has a lot to do with how open your airways are. If you have sleep apnea or other similar breathing issues, you may benefit from jaw realignment. Before we make any decisions, know that we will perform an in-depth examination, including detailed x-rays to make sure that we are doing the right thing in your best interest. We use cutting edge computer visual image technology and 3D imagery to create a model of your problem. Doing this we can analyze the issue and predict what you will look like after the procedure is complete. This better helps us to diagnose and for you to understand.
Pinnacle Oral Surgery Specialists will ensure that you are confident in the procedure before you undergo it, and will make sure that you’re comfortable as possible before, during, and after. We know how big of a deal it is to you and want to make sure you are pleased with your results.
